A pair of tall mahogany pedestals, or torchere stands, featuring elaborate carved decoration. Each stand is designed with a circular top having a moulded edge, positioned atop a tapering cylindrical shaft. The shafts are ornamented with multiple registers of deep-relief acanthus leaf carving, interspersed with ring-turned and gadrooned sections. Each pedestal terminates in a substantial, stepped cruciform base with matching moulded edges. The timber is a dense mahogany with a rich, dark high-gloss finish. The overall form and decorative motifs are consistent with Anglo-Indian colonial craftsmanship from the late 19th or early 20th century.
Dimensions not provided.
Condition report:
The moulded edges of the circular tops show visible rubbing, wear, and minor chips. The polished finish across the shafts and bases exhibits scattered surface scratches, small impact nicks, and abrasions. Accumulations of dust are present in the recessed areas of the deep-relief carving. The high-gloss finish shows some thinning or unevenness in areas of high contact.
