A Victorian or early 20th-century wooden school desk of utilitarian design. The desk is constructed from stained pine and features a rectangular sloped lid with a hinged opening to a single storage compartment. The upper fixed section is fitted with a longitudinal recessed pen tray and a circular aperture for an inkwell located at the top-right corner. The structure comprises two solid side panels with shaped cutouts forming the feet, connected by a low-set central horizontal stretcher. A simple pull-out wooden peg is situated on each side panel. The interior storage well is finished in a lighter, natural wood.
Condition report:
The desk exhibits significant signs of age and heavy institutional use. The top surface shows extensive scratching, gouges, indentations, and areas of finish loss, alongside various paint splatters. Widespread surface wear, scuffing, and small chips are present to the body and feet. The brass-toned butterfly hinges and side pegs are functional. The interior well baseboard shows heavy staining and wear.
