A pair of 20th-century British landscape paintings on canvas. The larger work is an oil on canvas by Walter Horsnell (1911-1997), depicting a single-arched stone bridge over a river with Hubberholme Church in the background. The painting is executed with expressive brushwork and is signed Walter Horsnell to the lower right. It is housed in a broad, off-white stepped wooden frame with a gilt inner slip.
The smaller work is an oil on canvas by Denys Hollis, depicting the railway viaduct at Knaresborough spanning the River Nidd with the town buildings on the bank behind. This work is executed in a simplified, representational style and is signed Denys Hollis to the lower right. It is presented in a slim, matching off-white wooden frame.
Condition report:
Both paintings appear to be in good overall condition with light surface dirt consistent with age. There are no visible signs of paint loss or restoration. The frames show minor scuffing and small chips to the painted finish, particularly at the corners. A piece of white string used for display is visible over the smaller painting in photographs and is not a defect.
