A diverse collection of elephant figurines and related animal figures executed in a variety of materials and styles. The assembly includes several hand-carved hardwood examples, ranging from folk-art pieces to detailed carvings, including a highly textured hand-chiselled figure and a stylised modernistic elephant with red and gold-painted accents. The collection also features carved stone and mineral figures, including soapstone and marble examples, notably a mother and calf group. Fabric and mixed media are represented by two Indian-style elephants dressed in decorated fabric caparisons with velvet, gold-tone embroidery, and tassels. Metalwork includes a cast tripod stand where the three legs are formed by small elephants supporting a central bowl. Ceramic and resin pieces are present, such as a grey-painted elephant with a small armadillo and a green-tinted seated elephant. A small white figure in simulated bone or resin is also included. The collection contains pieces reflecting various cultural styles, particularly African and Indian folk art traditions.
Condition report:
The collection is in generally good display condition. Specific defects noted include several carved wooden elephants missing one or both inlaid tusks. There are minor surface scuffs and scratches consistent with age and display on various pieces. General accumulation of dust is present in the crevices. One figure on the bottom shelf is posed in a reclining position and should be checked for stability.
