Buyer's Premium:

This oil on canvas painting by William Mellor depicts a traditional British river landscape. The composition features cattle wading and watering in a calm river, which reflects the soft light of a clouded sky. The scene is flanked by densely wooded banks and hazy hills in the far distance. The artist uses fine brushwork for the atmospheric sky and more expressive, textured strokes for the foliage. A signature in reddish-brown pigment is located in the lower right corner. The reverse of the canvas features a manufacturer’s stamp for G. Rowney & Co, London, W., Quality B. The work is housed in a contemporary light-toned wooden box frame. A small white auction label from Shobrook & Co, Plymouth, is attached to the frame.

Condition report:

The painting exhibits a significant accumulation of surface dirt and dust across the entire paint layer. The original varnish has yellowed considerably over time, affecting the overall colour balance, particularly in the sky and water. Fine, stable craquelure is visible throughout the paint surface. The canvas support remains stable on its original wooden stretcher, with minor staining and darkening to the reverse. The modern replacement frame is in good condition.
