A collection of British military service medals comprising an original mounted set and a selection of modern reproductions. The primary group is a swing-mounted set of four medals from the Second World War. This set includes the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal, and the War Medal 1939-1945. The stars are bronze six-pointed stars featuring the royal monogram GRI VI surmounted by a crown. The two circular medals are struck in cupro-nickel; the Defence Medal depicts two lions supporting a crowned oak tree, and the War Medal 1939-1945 depicts a lion standing over a two-headed dragon. The reverse of these circular medals includes the dates 1939 and 1945. The obverse of the circular medals bears the effigy of King George VI with the inscription GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX ET INDIAE IMP:. This set is mounted to a metal bar with a pin-back fastener. As is standard for British issue medals of this period, the items in the mounted group are unnamed as issued.
The collection also includes four individual modern medals housed in copper-toned resealable plastic packaging, each featuring a Trikoty brand holographic sticker. These replicas include a 1914-15 Star, a British War Medal 1914-20 featuring King George V, a Victory Medal 1914-19 with a rainbow ribbon, and a Second World War Defence Medal featuring King George VI. The replica Defence Medal features the legend GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP: on the obverse. Note that the ribbon on the British War Medal replica is incorrect for the issue.
Condition report:
The mounted Second World War medal group shows signs of age and service wear. The ribbons are significantly frayed with loose threads and staining, particularly visible on the reverse. The metal surfaces of these medals exhibit a natural dark patina, surface tarnish, and light scratches consistent with period handling. The mounting bar shows surface oxidation. The four individually packaged Trikoty medals are in mint, unissued condition with intact packaging.
