A vintage 9ct yellow gold oval locket, hallmarked for Birmingham, 1976, with the maker’s mark ‘CM’. The locket features a central oval-cut garnet cabochon of a deep wine-red colour, set within a rubbed-over bezel. The front face is decorated with an engraved foliate scroll border against a finely textured background, while the reverse is finished with a vertical brushed effect. The locket opens on a side hinge to reveal two internal photograph compartments. It is suspended from a contemporary fine-gauge 9ct yellow gold curb link chain with a standard spring ring clasp stamped ‘375’. The total gross weight of the locket and chain is 4.89 grams. The locket measures approximately 22mm by 17mm.
Condition report:
The item is in excellent vintage condition. The locket hinge is tight and the closure is secure, snapping shut firmly. The garnet cabochon is secure in its setting with no visible chips or abrasions. The 9ct gold surfaces show only minor micro-scratching consistent with light occasional wear. The chain is free from kinks or repairs, and the clasp is in perfect working order.
