A pair of character portrait drawings by the Devon-based artist and author Brian Carter. Each work is executed in white chalk on green toned wove paper, utilizing fine line work and the paper colour to define form and shadow. The first work is a front-facing portrait of an elderly man with a moustache, signed and inscribed lower right Brian Carter DEVON Village Cobbler. The second work is a profile portrait of an elderly man with a full beard wearing a brimmed hat, signed and inscribed lower right Brian Carter DEVON Old gamekeeper. Both works are presented in matching dark wood frames with a thin gold-toned inner slip under glass.
Condition report:
Both paper mounts exhibit significant brown foxing and spotting throughout. The frames show light scuffing and surface wear consistent with age. The drawings themselves appear to be in good condition behind the glass, though the mounts require replacement.
