An unrestored violin outfit comprising a violin by Thomas Hartmann, London. The instrument features a carved wooden body with an orange-red varnish, an ebony fingerboard, and ebony tuning pegs. The ebony tailpiece is decorated with mother-of-pearl floral and circular inlays. An internal paper label is visible through the f-hole, bearing the partial inscription AS HARTMANN VIOLI. The lot includes a vintage GSB black-painted wooden coffin style case with a blue fabric lining, a metal handle, and latches. Two wooden bows are included.
Condition report:
The instrument is in poor, unrestored condition and is sold as found. The body is heavily soiled with dust. The varnish shows extensive wear, scratches, and abrasions, with notable finish loss on the top plate. The bridge is missing, and the strings are detached or broken. The soundpost is not visible and likely loose. The case exhibits significant exterior scuffs and scratches, with heavy oxidation and rust to the metal components. Both bows are in poor condition; one is missing its hair entirely, and the other shows significant hair loss and potential warping.
