This lot comprises two British-made mantel clocks by Smiths. The first is a mechanical 8-day Napoleon hat style mantel clock housed in a dark wood case with an arched top and stepped bracket base. The circular dial features a cream chapter ring with Arabic numerals, three winding holes, and a chime/silent selector at the bottom. The mechanical movement plate features a decorative engine-turned spotted finish and is stamped Smiths, Made in England. It is equipped with a Westminster chime striking on five internal horizontal rods. A paper retailer label for Tucker & Sons & Grimshaws Ltd with serial number 3485 is affixed to the interior base. The second item is a modernist rectangular mantel clock featuring a dark wood case with brushed metal side supports and a glass front. The dial is finished in a wood-grain style with applied white baton hour markers and two vertical white decorative lines. It is marked Smiths Sectronic Battery and Made in Great Britain. This clock has been retrofitted with a replacement black plastic quartz movement marked Quartz and Great Britain. The lot includes two winding keys, one with an ornate bow-top and one T-handle key.
Condition report:
The mechanical mantel clock case shows general surface wear, minor scratches, and small chips to the edges consistent with age. The dial exhibits light foxing and spotting to the cream chapter ring. The movement appears complete but is untested. The modernist clock case shows minor surface scuffing, and the metal side supports exhibit light oxidation and tarnishing. The original Sectronic movement has been replaced with a generic quartz unit. Both items are sold as untested.
