A pair of oval shell cameo brooches, one featuring a hinged folding bail for dual-purpose wear as a pendant. Both items are set with carved shell cameos depicting classically styled female profile portraits in relief against a salmon-pink ground. The cameos are collet-set within 9 carat yellow gold frames, each finished with a decorative twisted rope-work border and a polished side gallery. The frames are fitted with traditional pins and revolving safety catches. The brooches bear full UK hallmarks for 9 carat gold, assayed in Birmingham, with the maker’s mark ‘AJS’. The total gross weight of the two items is 8.66 grams. The dimensions are approximately 25-30mm in height. Valuation basis: current 9 carat gold spot prices providing a solid intrinsic floor, and recent auction sales for hallmarked British cameo jewellery of similar quality and weight.
Condition report:
Both items are in very good condition. The shell carvings remain crisp with no visible chips, cracks, or significant internal crazing. The 9 carat gold frames show only light surface scratches and minor tarnishing consistent with gentle wear. Pins and safety catches are in good working order.
