A collection of three watercolour paintings on paper by the British artist A. Houghton. The group includes a large atmospheric woodland landscape and a pair of smaller topographical studies of the River Thames. The large landscape depicts a clearing or path bordered by bare winter trees, rendered with broad washes of violet, brown, and ochre. This work is signed A. Houghton in the upper left corner. The two smaller works provide views of the River Thames in Berkshire, with one inscribed Maidenhead Bridge and the other Lock near Maidenhead in the lower right corners. The technique is typical of the mid-20th-century British school, focusing on tonal values and fluid application of pigment. The works are housed in modern, high-quality professional frames with clean mounts. The larger landscape is set in a dark wood frame, while the pair of Thames views are in matching greenish-grey frames with a distressed finish. All frames are sealed with Art-Bak backing boards and fitted with cords for hanging.
Condition report:
The paper of all three paintings shows minor and uniform toning due to age, but remains free from significant foxing or water damage. Some light surface dust is trapped behind the glazing. The frames are in good overall condition with only minor, negligible scuffs to the edges. The works are in a very good and saleable state.
