This lot comprises a collection of 27 hand-crafted animal figurines and a decorative circular wall plaque. The plaque is fashioned from carved and incised Kisii soapstone and displays a multi-tiered savanna landscape set beneath the peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro. The upper rim is inscribed with the greeting Karibu Kenya. The decorative bands depict various safari animals including a cheetah, gazelles, rhinoceroses, giraffes, elephants, and hippos. The plaque is finished in a palette of black, terracotta orange, and cream, and includes a wire loop for hanging. The group of figurines consists primarily of elephants produced in varying sizes and materials. The majority are hand-painted wood featuring intricate folk-art motifs such as floral patterns, dots, and paisley designs. Most figurines use a base colour of red or black with yellow and white accents, while one larger elephant features multi-coloured neon stripes.
Figurine sizes range from approximately 1cm to 8cm.
Condition report:
The collection is in good overall condition with some signs of age and handling. The soapstone plaque shows minor surface scuffs and light rubbing to the edges. Several figurines exhibit small areas of paint loss, surface scratches, and minor chipping, particularly on the smaller, more delicate pieces.
