A collection of owl themed artworks and carved wooden figures including a signed collotype print by Raymond Watson. The centerpiece is a large framed print titled The Tawny Owl, depicting two owls perched on a birch branch. The lower right margin features a handwritten pencil signature reading Raymond Watson ’86 and a small pencil sketch of an owl eye remarque. The print is housed in a dark wooden frame with a red and cream double mount. The reverse of the frame bears a white adhesive label titled Certificate of Authenticity THE TAWNY OWL by Raymond Watson from The Franklin Gallery, which carries a printed signature for A. William Johnston, Vice President, Collector Relations.
The collection further comprises two carved wooden owl figures. The first is a stylised figure carved from a polished reddish-toned wood log, featuring its natural bark at the base. The second is a darker wood figure with incised feather detailing and inset black eyes. Additionally, there is an unframed print depicting a stylised owl with a faceted body, mounted on a grey paper board.
Condition report:
The framed Raymond Watson print appears in good condition with no visible foxing or damage to the paper (photo 1). The wooden frame shows minor surface scuffs consistent with age. The unframed geometric owl print shows significant brown foxing spots across the cream mounting paper (photo 4). The reddish wood carving has a small natural split in the bark base (photo 2). The darker wood carving shows minor dust accumulation in the incised details but no visible chips or cracks (photo 3). The certificate on the reverse of the frame shows general age-toning and some creasing to the paper (photo 8).
