The hand lantern is constructed from polished oak featuring a heavy convex bullseye glass lens secured by a circular metal bezel, with a steel wire bail handle and a top-mounted metal toggle switch. The bulkhead style barometer is housed in a circular brass case with a dial marked ANEROID BAROMETER and BRITISH MADE, featuring a scale from 26 to 31 inches of mercury and weather indicators for Stormy, RAIN, Change, FAIR, and Very Dry. The dial includes predictive text reading FALLS FOR WET OR MORE WIND S.W. and RISES FOR DRY OR LESS WIND NELY NW. NE. and carries a white adhesive inventory label reading A562C in blue ink. The lot further includes a brass hand pump with a T-handle plunger, a brass pipe assembly with a tethered plug, a round-head turned hardwood mallet, and a cast brass tray embossed with the characters POCKET CHANGE.
Condition report:
The wooden lantern casing shows surface scuffing and wear consistent with age, with oxidation and patina visible on the metal handle and switch (photo 1). The barometer dial exhibits significant foxing, staining, and age-related discolouration throughout, with a patch of adhesive residue at the 10 o\'clock position (photo 4 and 5). The brass valet tray shows heavy surface oxidation, pitting, and green verdigris corrosion to the centre (photo 2). The hardwood mallet shows minor dings and surface wear to the head (photo 3). Both brass mechanical components show minor surface scratches and light tarnish (photo 6 and 7). All mechanical and electrical items are untested.
