Sold for: £10
A collection of African and ethnographic style decorative items comprising two soapstone sculptures, a hardwood carving, and a framed relief plaque. The assembly includes a seated male figure smoking a long-stemmed pipe, carved from a dark grey soapstone with expressive facial features and a textured beard. A second soapstone piece depicts a female bust with an elaborate coiled hairstyle and a serene, smiling expression. The group also features a hand-carved hardwood bust of a woman with prominent ear ornaments and a textured headband. Completing the lot is a framed relief plaque depicting an African woman in profile, wearing multiple colourful necklaces and a tall headwrap, mounted on a black velvet-style background. The plaque is set within a black and gold-tone frame which bears a printed label numbered ‘169’. A handwritten white sticker reading ‘L833C’ is applied directly to the surface of the relief figure.
Condition report:
The stone carvings show minor surface scratches and a light accumulation of dust in the recessed areas (photos 1 and 3). The wood bust exhibits some natural fissures consistent with the ageing of the material (photo 2). The framed plaque appears in good order, though the frame shows minor scuffing and wear to the corners (photo 4).
