A collection of paper topographical and landscape artworks featuring a variety of media including watercolours, engravings, and coloured prints. The group includes two rural cottage scenes, one titled In the Vale of Evesham and the other Cottage near Bedford, both bearing the signature S. Stannard in the lower right corner. Also present is a pair of topographical views titled Windsor Castle and Arundel Castle, each signed Geo. H. Downing. A black and white engraving of ruins features printed inscriptions in the margins reading Jos Farington R.A. delt to the lower left and Landseer F.S.A. sculpsit to the lower right. One framed item contains a coloured print of Vixen Tor on Dartmoor; the verso displays an adhesive card for Tuck’s Post Card with the text Art Publishers to Their Majesties the King and Queen and attributes the work to A. de Breanski, Jr. An oval coastal print is accompanied by a gallery label for The Bookcase, 28 King Street, Tavistock. The artworks are housed in various frames including gilt-finished wood and black lacquer style mouldings. This lot comprises the framed artworks only; the blue shelving and storage containers shown in the background of the images are not included.
Condition report:
One frame, containing the view of Arundel Castle, has a large diagonal crack through the glass cover (photo 11). Widespread foxing, brown spotting, and moisture staining are visible on the paper mounts and margins of several works, most notably the Downing and Stannard prints (photo 12, 17, and 18). Significant accumulations of dust and debris are trapped behind the glass in multiple instances (photo 14 and 16). The wooden frames exhibit general scuffing, surface wear, and minor losses to the finishes (photo 6 and 11).
