A collection of ceramic character-ware, comprising traditional Toby jugs and novelty teapots, primarily of Staffordshire origin. The group features figures in eighteenth-century style dress, decorated with hand-painted glazes. Included are two Royal Doulton jugs: ‘Old Charlie’ depicting a winking man in a green coat, and ‘Toby XX’ featuring a figure seated upon a barrel. Both bear a printed green lion-over-crown logo and a circular mark reading MADE IN ROYAL DOULTON ENGLAND. The collection also contains several Shorter & Son pieces: a large Toby jug in a red coat, a large teapot modelled as a man holding a quill and scroll, and a smaller teapot seated on a barrel. These carry various embossed and printed marks including SHORTER ENGLAND and a green stamp reading GENUINE STAFFORDSHIRE HAND PAINTED SHORTER & SON LTD ENGLAND. A medium-sized ‘Toby Ale’ jug produced for the Charrington brewery bears a black printed WADE Regicor LONDON ENGLAND mark within a laurel wreath. A large standing ‘Hearty Good Fellow’ figure features a black printed crest to the base for Tony Wood Studio, Staffordshire, England; it is recorded as a limited edition of 500, numbered 40, and dated 22.8.84. One miniature seated figurine in a red coat is also present.
