This lot comprises two vintage chromatic harmonicas by M. Hohner, each accompanied by its original protective case. The group includes a sixteen-hole professional model and a twelve-hole chromatic model. Both instruments are constructed with metal cover plates, wooden combs, and internal metal reed plates and slide mechanisms. The larger instrument is finished with a red-painted wood comb, while the smaller instrument features ornate scrollwork and a central star engraved into the cover plates.
The larger harmonica is marked to the top cover plate with the incised text THE 64 CHROMONICA, 4 CHROMATIC OCTAVES, PROFESSIONAL MODEL, M. HOHNER, and GERMANY. The mouthpiece is numbered 1 through 16 above the holes, and the comb is marked with the letter C at the right end. Its wooden case has a textured brown finish with the name HOHNER printed in red block letters to the orange fabric interior of the lid. The smaller instrument is marked to the top cover plate with the words THE SUPER CHROMONICA, CHROMATIC HARMONICA, M. HOHNER, and GERMANY. The mouthpiece is numbered 1 through 12. This instrument is housed in a red textured cardboard case with a purple fabric lining.
Condition report:
The metal cover plates on the sixteen-hole harmonica show significant surface oxidation, pitting, and general wear (photo 1 and photo 2). There is minor paint loss to the red wood comb. The wooden case is structurally sound but shows scuffing and wear to the exterior finish (photo 2). The twelve-hole harmonica shows heavy tarnish, oxidation, and pitting to the metal cover plates (photo 3). The red case shows heavy edge wear, surface scuffing, and minor structural degradation typical for its age (photo 1). The internal reeds and windsavers have not been tested for playing condition.
