Sold for: £10
A collection of eleven ceramic Toby and character jugs in various sizes and styles. The lot includes a large character jug depicting a bearded man in a red uniform and a black cap marked with the red letters RH. A medium-sized Toby jug features a man in a blue coat and yellow waistcoat, with the front of the cream-coloured base carrying the printed text LORNA DOONE FARM. The group further comprises a town crier holding a bell and scroll, a snuff-taker in a pink waistcoat, and a seated jester in a harlequin-style orange and white striped costume. A miniature Toby jug in a green coat is moulded with the title THE DRINKER to the circular base. The collection is completed by five assorted miniature jugs, including figures in yellow, floral-patterned, and blue coats, a character head jug with a red neckerchief, and a small Toby jug with a dark brown monochrome glaze. No manufacturer marks are legible to definitively identify a maker.
Condition report:
The jester figure has brown adhesive tape or paper adhered to the top of its hat (photo 7). There is general surface wear to the underside of the larger jugs (photo 1). Light glaze crazing is visible on the snuff-taker figure (photo 5). The items appear otherwise generally intact.
