This lot comprises a pair of two Victorian style side chairs constructed from a dark-stained wood, possibly walnut. The chairs feature high, elaborately carved backrests in the Neo-Renaissance taste, with pierced crest rails displaying scrolled foliate and shell-like motifs surmounted by scrolled finials. The rectangular back panels and seats are upholstered in a cream-coloured floral damask fabric, finished with a decorative braided gimp trim to the borders. The frames are supported by turned and fluted front legs which terminate in small metal casters, and plain, square-section splayed rear legs. A white adhesive label is present on the lower back rail of the right-hand chair which reads GH486. No manufacturer backstamps or maker’s marks are visible on the wooden frames.

Condition report:

The chairs exhibit signs of significant use and wear. The cream damask upholstery on both seats shows prominent yellowing and dark staining, which is particularly evident to the centre and front edge of the right-hand chair (photo 1). There is visible sagging to the seat fabric. The dark-stained wooden frames show general surface wear throughout, including scuffs, scratches, and minor indentations consistent with age and domestic use (photo 1). The metal casters appear to be intact.
