A set of two Spode Blue Italian pattern ceramic pieces comprising a large wash jug and a matching circular basin. The items are decorated with a traditional underglaze blue transfer-print design featuring an Italianate landscape with classical ruins, figures, and trees. The decoration is framed by an intricate floral and scroll border. The wash bowl features a flared, scalloped rim, while the bulbous jug is fitted with a scrolled handle and a prominent spout. The base of the bowl bears a printed blackmark reading Spode, ENGLAND, ITALIAN, SPODE DESIGN, C.1816 M. These marks indicate the pieces were manufactured in England and based on the design first introduced circa 1816. This lot comprises the jug and basin only; the dresser and background items shown in the images are not included.
Condition report:
The bowl displays several small chips and losses to the ceramic body and glaze along the outer scalloped rim (photo 3). The interior and foot of the bowl appear to be in good order. The matching jug shows no significant chips, cracks, or repairs in the provided images (photo 2). Both pieces exhibit minor surface wear and light scratching consistent with age and domestic use.
