An antique style iron or steel and copper hanging balance scale. This weighing instrument comprises a central forged lever mechanism, possibly iron, featuring multiple integrated hanging hooks and a pivoting suspension point. The scale includes a large, shallow, circular pan, possibly wrought iron, which is suspended by three lengths of oval-link metal chain. A smaller, deep-sided cylindrical bucket, possibly copper, features a simple wire handle and is suspended by a separate chain. The central mechanism bears stamped marks on one side; however, these characters are not legible due to heavy surface oxidisation and rust. A small piece of white material is tied to the bucket handle with no visible text. This lot comprises the scale assembly only; the wooden support, white background, and other interior items shown in the images are not included.
Condition report:
The scale is in a rustic, as-found condition. Extensive surface rust and pitting are visible across all metal components, including the large pan and the suspension chains (photo 1). The deep bucket displays a dark, aged patina to the exterior and visible green verdigris oxidisation to the interior (photo 2). There are various surface scratches and small dents throughout, consistent with heavy utilitarian use (photo 2). Mechanical functionality has not been tested.
