This lot comprises two Coalport hand painted bone china figurines from the Characters series, based on the illustrations by Raymond Briggs. The first figurine, titled In The French Style, depicts the character in a blue coat, a blue and white striped shirt, and a black beret while carrying a baguette. The base is marked in black with FATHER CHRISTMAS, IN THE FRENCH STYLE, No. 955, In a worldwide edition of 4,000, COALPORT, Characters, Hand Painted Bone China, the copyright mark © RB/BP Ltd 2005, and FC07. This piece is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity numbered 0955 with the printed signature of Tony O Reilly Jnr, Chief Executive Officer, and is housed in a green presentation box with a manufacturer label. The second figurine, titled Christmas Begins, shows the character in a traditional red suit with a brown sack of toys. The underside is marked FATHER CHRISTMAS, CHRISTMAS BEGINS, No. 1676, In a worldwide edition of 4,000, COALPORT, Characters, Hand Painted Bone China, © RB/BP Ltd 2005, and FC09. It is contained within a matching green presentation box. Both boxes carry adhesive labels printed with barcodes and the respective model titles.
Condition report:
Both figurines are in good structural condition with no visible chips, cracks, or signs of professional repair. There is minor dark scuffing and shelf wear to the unglazed foot rims of both bases (photos 4 and 7). The presentation boxes show signs of wear; the box for Christmas Begins has a significant tear and creasing to the top opening flap (photo 5), while the box for the French style figurine has minor edge wear and a small tear to the opening flap (photo 1).
