A Victorian style burr walnut veneered twin pedestal desk with an inset leather writing surface. The exterior is finished with highly figured burr walnut veneers applied to the drawer fronts and the rectangular top frame. The desk is built in three sections, comprising the top and two supporting pedestals, each raised on a plinth base. The interior fittings include nine drawers in a standard configuration with three across the frieze and three in each pedestal. These drawers are mahogany-lined and feature hand-cut dovetail joints. The rectangular top is inset with a dark brown leather writing surface decorated with a gold-tooled floral scroll border. The desk retains a set of ornate brass bail handles with foliate backplates and matching brass escutcheons. The brass lock plates on the drawers feature impressed text that is not clearly legible. No other maker labels, stamps, or marks were observed on the wood during inspection.
Condition report:
The leather writing surface is in poor condition, displaying heavy scratching, general surface wear, and a large dark circular stain or burn mark on the right-hand side (photo 3). There are several small chips and losses to the burr walnut veneers, primarily located around the drawer edges and the corners of the plinth bases (photo 7). The wooden surfaces show numerous scuffs, scratches, and minor indentations consistent with age and heavy use (photo 2). Dark water marks and stains are visible on the finish, particularly on the sides of the pedestals (photo 5). The brass handles and escutcheons show a natural aged patina with some surface tarnishing (photo 1). The desk appears structurally sound despite the surface wear.
