A collection of thirteen UK Royal Mint base metal proof and commemorative coin sets in cases comprising a series of annual proof issues and specialized year sets. This lot includes annual proof sets for the years 1971 through 1979, housed in original colour-coded folders including red, green, blue, brown, and grey. The sets feature cupro-nickel and bronze coinage with the Arnold Machin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to the obverses and traditional heraldic reverse designs. Also included are four specialized sets: a set of English shillings dated 1953 to 1966, a set of sixpences dated 1953 to 1967, a 1971 Decimal Day transition set, and a dual set containing the first decimal issues alongside the last pre-decimal denominations. The 1977 set includes a commemorative crown struck for the Silver Jubilee. Several sets include a square copper plaque marked with the Royal Mint name and coat of arms. Folders are printed with identifying text such as Coinage of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and The Coinage of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland 1978.
Condition report:
The coins generally exhibit proof or uncirculated lustre. There is visible toning and oxidation to the bronze denominations, particularly evident on the half penny and penny coins in the 1973 set (photo 5) and the 1975 set (photo 8). The external packaging shows minor shelf wear, with some foxing and light staining to the white paper sleeves (photo 1). Standard pre-decimal sets show light circulation wear consistent with sets of this type. No major damage to the plastic inserts or folder spines is visible.
