This lot comprises three distinct brass fireplace-related items including a companion stand with tools, a decorative footed pot, and a miniature novelty set. The largest item is a companion stand of fabricated brass construction featuring a square-section column set upon a stepped and fluted pedestal base. It holds a pair of large scissor-action fireplace tongs on a forward-facing hook, an urn-topped poker, and an unusual companion tool with a brass sword-style hilt. The hilt is designed with a D-shaped knuckle guard, a ribbed grip featuring a copper-tone central band, and a domed pommel. The second item is a spun brass decorative pot or cauldron with a bulbous body and a rolled rim, supported by a flared circular pedestal foot. The sides are adorned with two cast lion-mask decorative mounts. The final item is a four-piece miniature brass companion set featuring ship-themed finials. Each cast handle and the top of the stand is embossed with the characters MAYFLOWER. The reverse of the top ship casting is stamped with the characters ENGLAND positioned above a small circular maker’s mark containing an illegible character.
Condition report:
The items show general surface oxidation and tarnishing throughout (photo 1). The sword-hilted companion tool displays heavier pitting and tarnish on the knuckle guard (photo 5). The brass pot exhibits significant surface wear, heavy tarnishing, and areas of verdigris to the interior and the underside of the foot (photo 8). The rings originally held by the lion-mask handles are missing (photo 7). The exterior of the pot shows various small dents and surface abrasions (photo 2). The miniature Mayflower set shows spots of verdigris in the recessed areas of the ship castings (photo 4). The black bristles of the brush are splayed and dusty (photo 3), and the shovel bowl shows discoloration consistent with heat exposure (photo 3).
