This lot comprises a set of hand carved wooden chess pieces with a matching folding wooden board that functions as a storage case. Dark mahogany-stained pieces, all of which are turned and feature hand-carved details, notably the stylised horse-head knights. Each piece is fitted with a dark felted base. The board is decorated with burnt-in pyrography techniques, featuring floral motifs on the dark squares and algebraic notation letters A through H and numbers 1 through 8 along the borders. The interior is lined with red flocked fabric to house the pieces when the board is folded. The case is secured with two metal swing-hook clasps and two metal hinges. No manufacturer branding or marks are present on the board or pieces.
Condition report:
The set is in good overall condition with minor surface wear consistent with age. There are small scuffs and scratches to the exterior varnish of the board (photo 2). The metal clasps and hinges show light oxidation but remain fully functional (photo 2). The interior red felt lining is intact, though it exhibits minor dust and compression marks from the storage of the pieces (photo 1). The wooden pieces show light handling wear consistent with use (photo 1).
