A Lachenal and Company rosewood and leather thirty-one button Anglo concertina in a mahogany case. The instrument is constructed with hexagonal rosewood ends featuring ornate pierced fretwork and thirty-one metal buttons, including a thumb-operated brass air lever. The six-fold green leather bellows are decorated with green and gold scrollwork paper decoration and fitted with black leather hand straps. An inset circular paper label under the fretwork reads LACHENAL & CO PATENT CONCERTINA MANUFACTURERS LONDON. The accompanying hexagonal carrying case is lined with red velvet and features a leather handle and brass hardware. An oval label on the velvet lining of the lid reads LACHENAL & CO. PATENT CONCERTINA MANUFACTURERS LONDON, W.C. The case is fitted with a lock, though no key is included in the lot.
Condition report:
The instrument shows general signs of play wear with surface scratches and minor scuffs to the rosewood ends, particularly around the hand rests (photos 2 and 3). Light oxidation is visible on the metal buttons and brass air lever (photo 6). The bellows appear intact with rubbing to the corner folds (photo 4). The mahogany case shows significant surface wear, including scratches, finish loss, and several small chips to the wood edges (photos 7 and 10). The leather top handle is heavily worn and cracked (photo 7) and the interior velvet lining is faded, frayed, and detaching in several places (photo 9). The metal escutcheon plate for the lock is missing (photo 8) and the base of the case is missing its original protective covering (photo 10).
