A trio of Louis Wain illustrations on paper in a triple aperture frame. The lot comprises three narrative scenes featuring anthropomorphic dogs, appearing to be possibly watercolors or color prints on paper. The illustration to the left shows three dogs at a wooden fence with fallen fruit, possibly oranges. The central illustration depicts a seated dog with a pink ribbon bow and carries a printed caption reading “What shall I do next?”. The right-hand illustration shows a dog in a blue jacket and red trousers carrying a wicker basket containing a duck. The artworks are presented in a cream mount within a dark wood frame featuring a gilt inner slip. A hand-lettered signature reading “Louis Wain.” is visible in the bottom left corner of the left-hand illustration and the bottom left corner of the right-hand illustration.
Condition report:
The paper support of the central illustration shows significant yellowing and age-toning across the entire surface (photo 3). The two flanking illustrations appear more vibrant with better colour retention (photo 2, 4). The frame shows minor scuffs and marks to the wooden edges consistent with age (photo 1, 5). The mount shows light surface dust. The verso is sealed with brown paper which shows some creasing and wear to the edges (photo 5).
