Start price: £10

Estimated price: £10 - £20

Buyer's Premium: 20%

Sold for: £10

A mid-century abstract mixed media textile work depicting an arrangement of sailing vessels. The piece is executed on a coarse brown burlap or hessian support, featuring an appliqué of various fabric scraps in shades of yellow, terracotta, brown, and blue. These elements are secured with heavy black stitched thread which serves to define the hulls, masts, and rigging of the boats. The composition is further enhanced with gestural embroidery in blue, white, and yellow thread to suggest water and the vertical reflections of the vessels. The leftmost sail displays a stitched grid pattern, while a prominent yellow sail towards the centre features the letter A rendered in black thread. The artwork is presented behind glass in a simple, narrow white-painted wooden frame. No artist signature or maker’s marks are visible on the face of the work.

Condition report:

The artwork appears in fair condition with general toning to the burlap support consistent with age. There is a visible mark or area of discolouration on the burlap support in the lower-left quadrant (photo 1). The frame shows some minor wear and small losses to the white paint, particularly at the corners (photo 1). No visible tears or losses to the appliqué fabrics or embroidery are apparent from the images provided.
