A collection of empty decorative and utility boxes featuring a range of artisanal techniques and materials. The assortment includes a mahogany-toned box with a hinged lid, featuring a circular white escutcheon around the keyhole and a second smaller plain wooden box with a brass-coloured handle. Notable pieces include a rectangular wooden box with a lid featuring a carved floral and foliate relief design, a Middle Eastern style marquetry box decorated with geometric bone and wood inlay to the lid and sides, and a small square wooden box with a fretwork-pierced facade. The group further comprises a red-lacquered box with hand-painted floral motifs, a light-wood octagonal box with a patterned border, and a decorative tin or papier-mâché box featuring a printed scene of a mother and child in a garden setting.
Condition report:
The collection shows visible signs of age and use across the various pieces. Surface scratches and minor abrasions are present on the wooden finishes (photo 1). There is oxidation and tarnishing to the metal hardware, particularly on the brass-coloured handle and keyhole surrounds (photo 2). Minor losses to the printed finish are visible on the edges of the pictorial box (photo 1), and there is light wear to the corners and edges of the lacquered and inlaid pieces (photo 3). The interior of the larger mahogany-toned box shows some scuffing and residue consistent with previous use.
