A vintage hand lantern constructed from metal with a cylindrical black-painted body and a conical yellow-painted top and handle. The lantern features a large circular clear glass lens to the front and a smaller circular lens to the rear, with a secondary horizontal handle attached to the side. The main body is embossed with two vertically aligned characters, which appear as a B above an R. These characters are consistent with the branding of British Railways. The lantern is vented with rows of small circular perforations around the upper rim and base. No internal burner or wick mechanism is visible in the provided images.
Condition report:
The lantern shows significant signs of industrial use and age-related wear throughout. There is extensive surface oxidation and rust, particularly concentrated on the yellow-painted handle and conical top (photo 2). The black paint on the main body is chipped and pitted, revealing underlying metal and areas of corrosion (photo 2). The glass lenses appear intact but are covered in a layer of surface dust, grime, and minor scratches (photo 1). The metal components show general pitting and accumulated dirt, and the secondary handle is heavily rusted (photo 3).
