This lot comprises a large-scale oil painting on stretched canvas, depicting an atmospheric harbor scene at dusk or night. The composition features a three-masted sailing ship moored alongside a stone quay, set against a backdrop of dark, silhouetted buildings with small, glowing orange window lights. The work utilizes soft, blended brushwork in the sky and water to create a misty effect, contrasted with impasto highlights on the ship’s rigging and the water’s surface reflections. The painting is signed HILTON. in the lower right corner. It is housed in an ornate gilt-composite frame decorated with scrolled acanthus leaf and shell motifs. The verso shows a white primed canvas with a central rectangular stamp reading GRANGE COTTON CANVAS MADE IN followed by illegible text. A yellow retailer label is present on the frame backing for PEETERS in New Zealand.

Condition report:
The painting is in good overall condition with minor surface dirt and light craquelure consistent with age (photo 1). The frame shows several small chips to the plaster molding, notably at the top edge and corners (photo 2, 3). The verso shows some silver adhesive tape along the top and bottom edges (photo 8).
