A collection of carved wooden elephant figurines in various sizes, ranging from small miniatures to larger cabinet-sized pieces. The group comprises figurines crafted in diverse styles, including simplified, stylised forms and more detailed, naturalistic carvings. The figures are primary carved from assorted hardwoods, appearing to include ebony, teak, and possibly mahogany or rosewood, with colours ranging from light honey tones to deep, dense black. Several examples feature inset tusks made from contrasting materials such as bone or plastic, while others are carved entirely from single pieces of wood. A few pieces are finished with textured, grey surfaces, possibly suggesting a stone or composite material. No maker’s marks or signatures are legible on the items.
Condition report:
The collection shows signs of age and handling throughout. Several figurines exhibit losses, including missing one or both inset tusks (visible in photos 1 and 2). One figurine in the centre foreground appears to have a loss to the tip of its trunk (photo 1). Surface wear is visible across the group, including minor scuffs, dust accumulation in carved crevices, and natural drying cracks or checking consistent with the wood grain (photos 2 and 3). One small elephant on the right side of the group is missing its tusks entirely (photo 2).
