A large painting on board, depicting a yellow and a black Labrador retriever against a moody, tonal background of blended greens, reds, and purples. The composition features the yellow Labrador in a recumbent position in the foreground, while the black Labrador is seated behind it. The work is executed in a realistic traditional style, focusing on the texture of the dogs’ fur and the character of their expressions through soft, blended brushwork. The painting is signed to the lower right corner in white paint J. Garfield. The canvas is housed in a substantial and ornate gilt wood and composition frame, decorated with a wide border of scrolled foliate and floral motifs and a beaded inner slip.
Condition report:
The painting appears to be in good overall condition. The canvas is well-tensioned on its stretcher with no visible signs of sagging or tearing. The paint surface is stable with no obvious craquelure, flaking, or paint loss observed (photo 1). There is a light accumulation of surface dust, particularly in the lower areas of the composition. The ornate gilt frame remains structurally sound, though there are some minor chips to the composition ornament at the corners and edges consistent with handling, and a light layer of dust within the recessed areas of the carving (photo 1).
