Sold for: £125
A pair of two rush seated side chairs, featuring a rustic or vernacular design. Each chair is constructed from a light-coloured wood, possibly ash or beech, finished with a distinct orange-toned stain. The frames consist of curved, solid-splat backrests set between rounded vertical posts that terminate in simple, rounded finials. The seats are hand-woven from natural rush in a traditional four-triangle envelope pattern. The underframes are built with four cylindrical legs, braced by simple round-profile stretchers. The joinery appears to be a combination of mortise-and-tenon and dowel construction. There are no other visible maker’s marks, stamps, or labels on the frames or undercarriages.
Condition report:
The chairs are in used condition with signs of wear consistent with age and utility. There are numerous scuffs, chips, and areas of finish loss to the stained wood frames, particularly evident on the legs and the tops of the back posts (photo 1 and 2). The rush seating remains intact and structurally sound, showing light surface wear and minor fraying typical of natural fiber materials (photo 1). The joints appear stable, although surface abrasions are present throughout the wooden components.
