This lot comprises two antique walking canes featuring decorative metal mounts. The first cane is fitted with an L-shaped crutch handle, possibly crafted from tagua nut or a dense light-coloured wood, joined to a reddish-brown stained wooden shaft by a decorative metal collar. This collar features chased foliate scrollwork and bears four vertically stamped marks. While the symbols are worn, they include a profile mark resembling a lion passant, a two-character maker’s mark, a town mark, and a date letter; however, these characters are not legible as a specific name or date. The shaft terminates in a modern black rubber ferrule. The second cane features a straight, light-toned wooden shaft, possibly malacca, topped with a metal pommel handle. The pommel is decorated with chased foliate designs. The shaft terminates in a tapered brass ferrule. Both canes exhibit hand-finished details to the metalwork and shafts.
Condition report:
The L-shaped cane shows significant tarnish and surface oxidation to the metal collar (photo 2). The wooden shaft has scattered scuffs and losses to the finish, particularly near the handle junction (photo 2). The rubber ferrule shows minor surface wear (photo 1). The knob-handled cane exhibits surface wear, scratches, and oxidation to the metal pommel (photo 1). The light-toned wooden shaft has scattered surface scratches and minor indentations consistent with age and use (photo 1). The brass ferrule shows typical tarnish and contact marks to the base (photo 1).
