Lot 349: An Anglo-Indian style Carved Hardwood Octagonal Occasional Table

This auction ended on September 30, 2026.

Start price: £20

Estimated price: £20 - £38

Buyer's Premium: 20%

An Anglo-Indian style carved hardwood occasional table, likely constructed from sheesham or rosewood. The octagonal top is formed from two joined solid wood panels, extensively decorated with dense chip-carved geometric fan motifs arranged in concentric borders. The table stands on four elongated, out-swept legs, each featuring repeating carved fan patterns along the outer face and terminating in scrolled feet. A central square lower stretcher provides stability, featuring a matching circular sunburst carving to the centre. The underside shows a cross-brace construction supporting the lower tier, secured with screws. No maker marks, signatures, or manufacturer labels are visible on the item.

Condition report:

A significant structural split is visible running through the centre of the octagonal top where the two panels have separated (photo 4). There is a visible crack and separation at the joint where one leg meets the tabletop frame (photo 6). Various scuffs and minor losses are present to the carved edges and extremities of the legs and feet (photo 7 and 9). The carved surfaces show an accumulation of dust and general surface wear consistent with age.
