A Regency period tilt top breakfast table constructed from mahogany with a rectangular top featuring rounded corners, crossbanded borders, and fine light wood string inlay. The tabletop is supported by a substantial central pedestal with a turned and spiral-carved column, resting on a quadripod platform base. The base is supported by four splayed saber legs, each terminating in an embossed brass box caster. The underside of the table bears a clear impressed stamp in three lines following the wood grain, which reads JAMES WINTER 101 WARDOUR ST SOHO LONDON. The table utilizes a brass tilt mechanism with a spring-loaded catch and is supported by a heavy rectangular block and hinges. The grain and construction details are consistent with the furniture produced by the London cabinet maker and appraiser James Winter during the early 19th century.
Condition report:
The table is in fair antique condition with visible signs of age and wear. The tabletop shows significant surface distress, including numerous scratches, ring marks, and patches of finish loss and fading (photo 2 and 3). There is a deep diagonal scratch or narrow crack running through the maker\'s stamp on the underside (photo 8). The spiral carving on the pedestal shows some minor scuffing and dust accumulation in the recesses. The saber legs and platform base exhibit scuffs and finish wear consistent with use at floor level (photo 4). The brass casters show tarnish and surface oxidation, with one appearing slightly misaligned. The tilt mechanism is functional, though there is minor splintering and signs of historical repair around the wooden hinges and support blocks (photo 6 and 7).
