Start price: £8

Estimated price: £8 - £18

Buyer's Premium: 20%

Sold for: £6

An antique Anglo-Indian hardwood serving tray featuring decorative bone or ivory style marquetry. The rectangular tray is constructed with two integral, decoratively carved scrolled handles. The central wooden field is decorated with pictorial inlay depicting a trio of elephants of varying sizes traversing a hilly landscape, flanked by two engraved palm trees. The scene is enclosed within a double-line inlaid border. The inlay work includes detailed engraving to the animal figures and foliage to provide texture and depth. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the upper surface. The underside shows the plain reverse of the hardwood construction.

Condition report:

The tray shows signs of age and wear. There is a visible horizontal grain split running through the centre of the wooden field. A significant area of the lower-right outer frame has broken away and shows evidence of a poorly executed adhesive repair and loss of finish. The handles show surface wear and minor scuffing consistent with age and use.
