Estimated price: £50 - £100

Buyer's Premium: 20%

Sold for: £65

A mid-20th century camphor wood blanket chest featuring extensive high-relief carving to all exterior surfaces. The chest is constructed from camphor wood, traditionally utilised for its insect-repellent properties, and features visible finger joints at the corners. The exterior is decorated with traditional Chinese nautical and village scenes, including junks, pagodas, and figures, framed by stylized dragon and cloud borders. The hinged lid incorporates a protective glass insert secured by four brass L-shaped corner brackets. Internally, the chest is fitted with a single, sliding, removable half-width camphor wood tray. The hardware includes a large circular brass butterfly style latch plate with a pin fastener, three internal brass butt hinges, and a sliding brass lid stay. The piece stands on integral bracket feet which form part of the carved body. There are no visible maker’s marks or stamps on the piece.

Condition report:

The chest is in good structural condition with a well-preserved reddish-brown patina. The high-relief carvings remain crisp and detailed. Minor surface wear, including light scuffs and scratches consistent with age and domestic use, is visible around the base and feet (photo 1). The glass top is intact and free from visible cracks or chips. The brass hardware shows a natural aged tarnish but remains functional. The interior wood appears clean and the removable tray is present (photo 4).
