A late Victorian or Edwardian style washstand or side table constructed from oak with a dark stained finish. The piece features a rectangular slate or dark stone slab top, set above a single full-width frieze drawer. The drawer is fitted with two turned wooden knobs and has a green felt-lined interior, which is secured by several small circular brass pins. The table is supported by four barley-twist turned legs, which are joined by a matching rectangular lower shelf. The piece features a decorative galleried splashback with a central carved foliate crest. The base is designed to stand on four brass cup castors. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the piece.
Condition report:
The washstand is in fair to poor condition and requires restoration. The slate top exhibits widespread surface scratches and scuffing (photo 1). The wooden frame shows significant wear, including scuffs, scratches, and loss of finish, most notably on the drawer front and the lower shelf (photo 2). Two of the lower leg sections have detached; one shows a broken wooden dowel and the other shows evidence of previous adhesive repair at the join (photos 4 and 5). The original brass castors are present but detached alongside the broken leg sections. The green felt lining in the drawer is worn and shows minor fraying (photo 3).
