This lot comprises a cased set of twenty four dessert knives and forks, alongside a separate two piece carving set. The dessert service consists of twelve knives and twelve forks, each featuring silver plated blades and tines decorated with chased foliate and floral scrollwork. The handles are constructed from carved mother-of-pearl in a helical twisted design, joined to the metalwork by decorative ferrules. The ferrules and the base of the blades carry impressed markings; however, these characters are not legible as a specific name or date mark. This set is housed in a two-tiered mahogany case with a blue velvet-lined interior and brass fittings. The carving set includes a steel carving knife and a two-tine carving fork, both fitted with handles of a brown and amber toned material, possibly horn or a synthetic imitation. The carving set is presented in a separate hinged case with a textured red exterior and a satin-lined interior.
Condition report:
The mother-of-pearl handles on the dessert service show natural tonal variations and some reddish-brown staining near the ferrules on several examples in the lower tier (photo 2). The silver plated surfaces exhibit light tarnishing and surface wear consistent with age (photo 3). The mahogany case has minor scuffs to the exterior and wear to the internal lining. The carving knife blade shows surface scratches and minor pitting (photo 4). The red carving set case displays rubbing and loss of finish at the corners and edges (photo 1).
