A traditional British country hunting scene in oil on canvas, featuring three figures in red coats mounted on horses, accompanied by a pack of hounds crossing a shallow ford. To the left is a large, half-timbered farmhouse with prominent chimneys, and in the distance, a windmill is visible under a broad, cloud-swept sky. The composition is rendered in an earthy palette of ochres and umbers, with expressive highlights to the water surface and animals. The painting is presented in a heavily decorative, Rococo style swept gilt-composition frame featuring floral and foliate scrolling at the corners and centres. A cursive signature in the lower-right corner reads john Horsewell.
Condition report:
The canvas appears to be under reasonable tension, although there is slight undulation visible near the top edge. The paint surface shows visible dirt and a light layer of dust, with a few minor scuffs in the upper-left sky area. The frame has several areas of damage to the composition ornament, including a significant loss to the floral moulding on the top-right corner (photo 4) and various smaller chips and cracks to the gilt finish along the edges.
