A Philco tabletop valve radio housed in a wood case, likely walnut veneer. The cabinet features a vertical tombstone aesthetic with four black control knobs and a rectangular vertical slide-rule dial. A small brass-toned license plate is affixed to the interior cabinet wall, which reads: “This instrument is manufactured under a License granted by the Owners of British Letters Patent… H.M. Postmaster-General… No. H.A. 9979”, and specifies “5 VALVES”. The internal metal chassis contains six vacuum tubes (valves), several of which are protected by perforated metal shields. A large speaker is mounted behind the front baffle with an aged grille cloth. The manufacturer’s name “PHILCO” is visible in raised lettering on the front panel between the control knobs.
Condition report:
The wood cabinet finish shows significant wear, including heavy scuffing, scratches, and loss of lacquer across all surfaces (photo 1). A vertical separation in the veneer is visible on the left side of the front face (photo 1). The speaker grille cloth is dusty and aged. Internally, the metal chassis exhibits heavy surface oxidation and rust, particularly on the valve shields and the transformer (photo 2). The wiring appears original with aged insulation. The item is sold as untested and requires professional servicing before any attempt is made to power it on.
