A collection of vintage folding pocket knives and accessories, including a figural silver baby rattle. The rattle is designed in the form of a jester or Punch figure, featuring a central embossed metal body with two suspended spherical bells. The figure is fitted with a white ring at the top and a mother-of-pearl style handle at the base. The silver ferrule connecting the body to the handle bears four struck hallmarks in a horizontal row, including a maker’s mark consisting of letters in a rectangular cartouche, a lion passant, an anchor for the Birmingham assay office, and a lowercase date letter.
The assortment also contains several folding pocket knives: two larger multi-blade folders with off-white ribbed scales possibly made of bone, and one single-blade folder with dark figured scales possibly made of horn. Also included is a miniature multi-tool keychain knife with iridescent shell-style scales featuring a master blade and corkscrew on a metal snake-link chain, a tiny single-blade folding knife with similar iridescent scales, and a small crucifix pendant with a metal corpus mounted on a white cross. The items are presented in a small blue cardboard box with a padded cotton-wool interior.
Condition report:
The silver rattle exhibits significant dark tarnish and patina across all metal surfaces (photo 2). The mother-of-pearl handle has a visible longitudinal crack or fissure running from the ferrule towards the tip (photo 3). The larger folding knives show heavy oxidation, dark staining, and pitting to the carbon steel blades (photo 4). The scales on the larger knives show surface grime and minor age-related wear to the pin areas. The miniature knives and crucifix appear in fair condition with minor surface wear. The presentation box shows light shelf wear and scuffing to the edges.
