Sold for: £30
A late Victorian adjustable reading table featuring a solid oak top with a dark stain. The table is equipped with a specialized mechanical system for height and tilt adjustment, including a large cast-iron steering-wheel-style handle on the underside and two brass-handled sliding page holders at the lower edge. The wooden top is mounted to a telescopic black-painted cast-iron pedestal, which connects to a horizontal support bar supported by two tripod-style bases. Each base features foliate scroll decoration and small metal casters, allowing the unit to be moved and positioned over a chair or bed. An ivory-coloured rectangular label is fixed to the underside of the wooden top, printed in black with the text FOOTS’ PATENT Makers J. FOOT & SON LTD. 171 New Bond St., LONDON, W. This piece represents the specialized patent furniture produced by the firm at their London premises during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Condition report:
The table is in used antique condition. The wooden top exhibits surface wear, scratches, and a significant vertical shrinkage crack extending through the centre of the grain near the maker\'s label (photo 4). The cast-iron frame shows widespread paint loss, surface oxidation, and general wear consistent with age and industrial application (photo 2). While the mechanical adjustment components appear physically intact, they may require cleaning and lubrication to ensure smooth operation.
