Bidding closed on October 4, 2026.

Start price: £40

Estimated price: £40 - £100

Buyer's Premium: 20%

A large-scale nocturnal oil painting on stretched canvas by the artist Barry Hilton. The work is rendered in an atmospheric Tonalist style, depicting several square-rigged ships moored within a misty harbour at night. The central vessel is highlighted by a warm interior glow from its stern gallery, reflecting against the dark water alongside silhouettes of smaller rowing boats and dockside buildings. The composition utilises a palette of deep browns and greys, punctuated by impasto highlights representing moonlight and lantern fire. The work is signed to the lower left in red pigment as HILTON followed by a vertical stroke. The painting is housed in a wide, ornate gilt and cream-toned wood and gesso frame featuring scrolled acanthus leaf corners and a beaded inner border. The verso shows the canvas secured to a wooden stretcher with metal staples and fitted with a wire hanging mount.

Width: 87.5 cm
Height: 67 cm.

Condition report:

The canvas shows a small indentation to the upper left quadrant, visible in raking light (photo 1). The frame exhibits several areas of loss and cracking to the gesso, particularly evident at the corners and along the upper and lower edges (photos 1, 2, and 4). Surface dust is present across the painting and within the recessed areas of the frame. The reverse of the canvas appears in good order with no visible patches or significant repairs (photo 8).
