A Chinese export style coffee table constructed from a dark-stained hardwood, possibly camphor wood. The rectangular top features a deeply carved relief scene protected by an inset sheet of clear glass. The central panel depicts a traditional courtyard landscape populated with multiple figures in traditional dress, architectural elements, and foliage. The table is supported by four chow style legs, which are stout and curved, terminating in inward-turning scroll feet. The apron is further decorated with carved fretwork and floral motifs. The side panels also feature relief carvings of traditional figures and structures. No maker’s marks, labels, or signatures are visible on the piece.
Condition report:
The table is in good overall condition, with visible surface wear consistent with age and use. There are scuffs, scratches, and finish loss particularly evident along the outer edges of the frame and the knees of the legs (photos 1 and 4). A visible gap is present in the miter joint on the top left of the frame (photo 1). The carving remains well-defined with no major losses noted to the figures or details. The glass top shows light surface scratches from use (photo 2).
